Surroundings in Piloña

Location in Asturias, northern Spain

The county of Piloña is located South from both the counties of Villaviciosa and Colunga; it is located North from Caso, Sobrescobio and Laviana; West from Parres and Ponga; and East from Nava and Cabranes. It belongs to the "Mancomunidad de municipios del Oriente de Asturias" (Community of Eastern Counties of Asturias).

The county of Piloña is surrounded by several ranges of mountains, sierras and peaks: from the height 150,5 m. above sea level where Infiesto is located, to the peak of Vízcares, the highest in the county, at its 1419 m. whose name was taken by the local mountaineering group.

Prehistory: There is evidence of habitation since prehistoric times. The ‘Sidrón' cave, between Cadanes and Vallobal, has become an excavation area and a main point of reference on the Neanderthals in Asturias.

Art and Culture

Asturian Romanesque artis represented by the church of Santa Maria of Villamayor, the southern face and apse of which date from when it was a Benedictine convent, famous not only for its power but also its laxity. In fact in 1377 and 1530 the ecclesiastical authorities deposed the abbess, divided its members among other nearby convents and eventually annexed the convent to that of San Pelayo of Oviedo. The apse is characterised by half columns and two horizontal lines between which there is a traditional window. It is constructed with excellent ashlars in which the stonemasons' marks, in capitals, are clearly divisible

The Sidrón

He is known as the "Sidrón man" after the fossils found in the cave of Sidrón, between Vallobal and Cadanes (PI-9), in 1994. The cave has become an international reference for the study of the "homo neanderthalensis", who appeared in Europe 230,000 years ago and became extinct about 35,000 years ago due to causes possibly related to genetic isolation and their low capacity to adapt to climatic change.

Beaches in Asturias, near Piloña

The strategic position of the municipality of Piloña within Asturias allows mountain and beach lovers to be a stone's throw away from both environments. Other municipalities on the shores of the Cantabrian Sea are located very near Piloña; these are Villaviciosa, Colunga y Ribadesella. They all have several beaches, which tend to be of fine, golden sand, although here we mention only the most important ones. The approximate distances from Infiesto to the beaches of Villaviciosa are 33 km., 30 km. to Colunga and 38 km. to Ribadesella.

The asturcón. Horse of Asturias

The Asturcón is one of the horses referred to in classic texts, with its first known mention in the Retorica ad herenium (80 B.C.). Accordingto some interpretations of the name, "Asturcón" could derive from the pre-Roman term "con", meaning crag or rock, thus implying "Asturian mountain horse".

Gastronomy

Fresh products from vegetable gardens, farms and high mountains are the pillars of the cuisine in Piloña. There is always a choice of traditional stews, from kale and cabbages to potatoes and rice, always with a touch of saffron and, most probably, with another touch of ham and chorizo. Quite well know are also free-range chickens and rabbits. And, of course, the full variety of Asturian cheese, taking in account that Asturias is the richest region in Spain for cheeses.

Hunting & Fishing

Hunting and fishing are quite popular in Piloña, permits provided. Rivers and streams abound and some species can be found: common trout (Salmo trutta fario) and eel (Anguilla anguilla). Of course there are other more difficult to catch species, for professionals: salmon (Salmo salar), brown trout (Salmotrutta), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchusmykiss), flathead mullet (Mugil cephalus), common minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus)and sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus).

Hiking trails & Picnic areas

There are many hiking trails within the county of Piloña, most of them around the surrounding mountains and without proper indications. Our Association, ASPITUR, with the precious help of the local mountaineering Group Vízcares, published in 2006 auseful book: it gives indications and maps to hike 13 walking trails, 6 by bike (BTT) and one for the adventurous sport of descending into a river gorge.
